Benefits of Language Immersion
What This Means for Your Child
The short version: early childhood is the best time to learn a second language, and learning Mandarin does not hold your child’s English back — it actually strengthens the brain. Children who start young pick up the language naturally, and the benefits last a lifetime. Here is what the research says, in plain terms.
Young Brains Are Built for Two Languages
Babies can tell two languages apart from their first year of life and build two separate but connected language systems — without delaying either one. Between ages two and five, a child’s brain absorbs new sounds, words, and tones almost effortlessly, making this the ideal window to begin. (Kuhl, 2004; Genesee et al., 2004)
It Strengthens the Brain
Learning two languages early is linked to greater density of brain tissue in areas tied to language, memory, and attention, and to more activity in the regions that process language. Over time, this is associated with stronger focus and problem-solving skills — benefits that reach well beyond language itself. (Mechelli et al., 2004; Kovelman et al., 2006; Bialystok)
It Helps English, Not Hurts It
Many parents worry immersion will slow English. Decades of research show the opposite: when both languages are supported, children acquire English on schedule and perform as well as — or better than — their peers on standardized tests in English and math. Most children ages three to eight can add a second language while gaining lasting cognitive, cultural, and economic advantages. (Collier & Thomas; Bialystok)
